Welcome to our new site dedicated to the student writing inspired by a recent visit of poet extraordinaire, Bill Buczinsky.

Bill is a regular visitor to our school district thanks to the generous support of our parents and the Spirit of 67 Foundation.

We created this site to spotlight some of the wonderful poetry written by our students during Bill’s artist-in-residency in October 2007.

And though there were literally hundreds of poems inspired by Bill’s visit, we decided to feature one poem from each of our fourth grade classrooms.

You will find an audio recording (recited by the student author) along with a visual representation and transcript for each of the twelve poems.

Bill was also gracious enough to sit down and be interviewed by three students, so be sure to watch the video.

For our audio segments, it was extremely difficult for the classroom teachers to select just one poem to represent their class - so here is a bonus poem. We feel it summarizes all of what Bill Buczinsky stands for; more importantly, it represents how poetry can spark the creative mind of a child.

The World
By Jacqueline

To enter the world of poetry,
                                       Go through the spinning door.
Where wacky weird things can happen,
It’s like the world has turned upside down.

Army guns turn into pink gushy hearts of love,
And cute kitties turn into freaky fierce tigers,
And lions that have bad hair days!

This world is very hard to get into,
For you have to be jumpy, springy,
                                Wiggly, waggly, weird
                                And have a wicked imagination!
